Monica Fitzgerald
PhD
In addition to my work with Resilient Families, I serve as a faculty member, researcher, and director at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Center for Resilience + Well-Being. Through community partnerships and grant-funded projects, I work to expand access to trauma-responsive parenting supports and mental health interventions for children and families.
At Resilient Families, I’m grateful to share our parenting program, Let’s Connect®, which I co-developed with Kimberly Shipman, PhD, and Lucianne Hackbert, PhD. I also co-created RISE (Resilience in Schools and Educators), a program designed to support K–12 educators in building resilient school communities.
I am passionate about helping children and families access the most effective trauma-focused care, wherever they are. I am a certified trainer and consultant in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (AF-CBT), and I enjoy training mental health professionals locally, nationally, and internationally.
I live in Boulder, Colorado, and I’m a mom of three in a blended family. My own parenting journey, including supporting a child with chronic medical trauma, has shaped and deepened my commitment to this work. I rely on the same skills I teach to navigate co-parenting, stay connected, face challenges with openness and humor, and practice self-compassion. One of my passions in parenting work is supporting caregivers to have difficult conversations with their children that build connection, healing, and resilience.
My therapeutic approach is grounded in cognitive-behavioral strategies, with mindfulness, compassion-based practices, and neuroscience woven throughout. I work collaboratively, providing practical, evidence-based strategies while encouraging caregivers to trust their own inner strengths, wisdom, and intuition.
I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Georgia and completed my clinical internship and NIMH-funded postdoctoral fellowship at the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center at the Medical University of South Carolina. Outside of work, I enjoy time with family and friends and love staying active through rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, and skiing, as well as tending to my orchids, tinkering on the piano, and drinking tea.

Fees & Insurance Information
At Resilient Families Therapy, clinicians typically schedule one 55-minute appointment per week, though session length and frequency may vary. It is the client’s responsibility to remember the date and time of scheduled appointments. While email confirmations can be provided upon request, these are offered as a courtesy only.
If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, we require at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations or no-shows without proper notice will be charged the full rate of the session.
In cases of extenuating circumstances, you may call our office as soon as possible to request a waiver for a missed session. Waivers are granted at the clinician’s discretion.
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost.
Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.
- You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
- Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
- If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
- Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 800-985-3059.
At Resilient Families, we are an out-of-network provider, which means we do not bill insurance directly. Payment is due in full at the time of service.
Session Fees
Our fees are:
- Initial Intake Session (90 minutes): $300
- Standard Therapy Session (55 minutes): $225
- Extended Session
- 75 minutes = $260
- 90 minutes = $295
If you are experiencing financial hardship please reach out to us to discuss options.
Although we are not in-network with any insurance companies, we are happy to provide a superbill — an itemized receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider for potential out-of-network reimbursement.
Reimbursement amounts vary depending on your plan and coverage. We recommend contacting your insurance company directly to ask:
- Do I have out-of-network mental health (or therapy) benefits?
- What percentage of the session fee will be reimbursed?
- Do I need pre-authorization for out-of-network services?
- How do I submit a superbill for reimbursement?
Please note that reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends entirely on your insurance provider.
